{"id":9623,"date":"2022-10-24T14:38:43","date_gmt":"2022-10-24T19:38:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cisco.org\/?p=9623"},"modified":"2023-01-27T18:19:11","modified_gmt":"2023-01-28T00:19:11","slug":"cisco-partners-with-chicago-police-and-fire-departments-for-union-trades-fair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cisco.org\/wp-content\/mystaging01\/2022\/10\/24\/cisco-partners-with-chicago-police-and-fire-departments-for-union-trades-fair\/","title":{"rendered":"CISCO Partners with Chicago Police and Fire Departments for Union Trades Fair"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>CISCO Partners with Chicago Police and Fire Departments for Union Trades Fair<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Oct. 24, 2022<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">CHICAGO \u2013 When Chicago Police office Veronica Meraz received an invitation from CISCO to attend its inaugural July 22 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.org\/wp-content\/mystaging01\/2022\/07\/27\/cisco-holds-inaugural-hands-on-trades-fair\/\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Hands-On Trades Fair<\/span><\/a>, held at the Chicago-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lu134.org\/\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">IBEW Local 134<\/span><\/a>, she assumed it would have an impact on the young adults she brought along &#8211; but didn\u2019t realize the impact it would have on <em>HER<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-9628\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.org\/wp-content\/mystaging01\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/one-summer-chicago-logo_color-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Union Trades Fair\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">After seeing hundreds of people having conversations with Union representatives regarding how to apply for a Union construction apprenticeship program, Meraz said she was, \u201cblown away.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cIt was an amazing opportunity to see alternatives to office jobs or corporate jobs &#8211; which are not for everyone. Some people are just better with their hands,\u201d she explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The young adults Meraz brought with her were participants of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onesummerchicago.org\/\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">One Summer Chicago<\/span><\/a>, a 6-week summer program that allows Chicago individuals, aged 14-26, to have employment and internship opportunities with government institutions, community-based organizations and companies \u2013 all while getting paid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-9640\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.org\/wp-content\/mystaging01\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2022_Chicago-police_fire-department_unions_hands-on-fair-242x300.jpg\" alt=\"Union Trades Fair\" width=\"242\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.org\/wp-content\/mystaging01\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2022_Chicago-police_fire-department_unions_hands-on-fair-242x300.jpg 242w, https:\/\/www.cisco.org\/wp-content\/mystaging01\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2022_Chicago-police_fire-department_unions_hands-on-fair-827x1024.jpg 827w, https:\/\/www.cisco.org\/wp-content\/mystaging01\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2022_Chicago-police_fire-department_unions_hands-on-fair-768x951.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cisco.org\/wp-content\/mystaging01\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2022_Chicago-police_fire-department_unions_hands-on-fair.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Through the program, young adults who choose to work with the <a href=\"https:\/\/home.chicagopolice.org\/about\/police-districts\/1st-district-central\/\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Chicago Police Department<\/span><\/a> shadow officers at the city\u2019s various 22 police districts, learning the work environment and interacting with the community. At the police department, Meraz is a Domestic Violence Liaison Officer and Senior Liaison. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Even though the CISCO-sponsored Trades Fair was held July 22 &#8211; and nearing the end of One Summer Chicago program, Meraz made sure to have free time available for the youth working the program at <a href=\"https:\/\/home.chicagopolice.org\/about\/police-districts\/1st-district-central\/\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">District 1 \u2013 Central Police Department<\/span><\/a> to attend. Because the young adults she brought were either 16- or 17-years old, and still trying to figure out what they want to do, Meraz used the Trades Fair to open their eyes to alternative career options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cThey were vary curious and asked questions. I wanted them to understand they don\u2019t need a 4-year degree and college debt just to have a successful career. The meeting proved successful as one of the men reached out to Meraz shortly after the Trades Fair with additional questions. \u201cI connected him with the right people for further information. I\u2019m making sure I don\u2019t lose touch with him.\u201d For this reason, she is committed to having another Trades Fair next year. \u201cThis is definitely not going to be a one-time deal,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Meraz understands the Chicago Fire and Police Departments are not construction trades, but she teaches the youth she mentors to consider ALL Union careers a Brotherhood\/Sisterhood. CISCO Executive Director Dan Allen agrees with her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cHelping to recruit local firefighters and police officers to keep communities safe is the mission of Unions and signatory contractors,\u201d Allen explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">An example of this is Chicago\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicago.gov\/city\/en\/depts\/fss\/supp_info\/youth_services.html\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Department of Family and Support Services<\/span><\/a> (DFSS) goal in supporting career-oriented opportunities to help youth develop transferable skills to increase employability through job readiness training. It also provides them with guidance, training and supervision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cThe police have always worked with young people to help in finding them career opportunities. If possible, she would like to see it occur in early July, shortly after the start of the city\u2019s One Summer Chicago program.
